Performance Improvement Plans (PIPs)
In contrast to a standard review of an employee’s general performance in all areas, a Performance Improvement Plan (“PIP”) is a tool used by employer's to either help improve an executive's performance or manage the employee out. A PIP will typically identify specific areas in need of improvement and provide a time frame by which such improvement must be made. At the end of the time period, the executive's performance is reviewed, and a determination about employment status will be made.
However, if your employer is looking to create "cause" for termination, the PIP will often misrepresent performance issues and circumstances. In such cases, it is imperative that the executive craft a tactical response. A PIP process is a serious matter, and should be handled with professional care and judgment.
